Uncertainty analyses of neutron cross sections for $$^{235}$$U in the resonance region

Covariances of neutron cross sections for $$^{235}$$U were evaluated in the resonance region to estimate the accuracy of various design calculations. Energy-averaged cross-section covariances were deduced from available measurements by using the least-square method. The data obtained were combined with the $$^{235}$$U data of JENDL-3.3 in order to complete uncertainty infomation required by users.

Measurements of power profile in TRACY supercritical experiment by detecting epithermal neutrons

We have tried to measure the power profile in the TRACY supercritical experiment with high accuracy by detecting epithermal neutrons. In order to measure the epithermal neutrons, a cadmium covered $$^{235}$$U fission chamber was used, and polyethylene, a neutron moderator, was set inside the cadmium to enhance the neutron detection efficiency. In addition, a lead shield was used to reduce the noise current due to gamma-rays. The measured results were compared with the ones using a thermal neutron detector, and it was found that the time delay effect in the thermal neutron detection, which was caused by the flight time of neutrons to reach the detector, distorted the power profile and reduced its peak value. The reduction ratio of peak power was about 4% for the relatively slow power change with the inserted reactivity of 1.5$, but it became over than 40% for the rapid power change with the reactivity of about 3$.

Adjustment of total delayed neutron yields of $$^{235}$$U, $$^{238}$$U and $$^{239}$$Pu in JENDL-3.2 using benchmark experiments on effective delayed neutron fraction $$beta_{eff}$$

The cross section adjustment method was applied to total delayed neutron yields of $$^{235}$$U, $$^{238}$$U and $$^{239}$$Pu of the JENDL-3.2 file by using experimental results of effective delayed neutron fraction $$beta_{eff}$$ at six cores built in two fast critical facilities of the MASURCA and FCA and a thermal critical facility of the TCA to improve these yields. The adjustment was carried out on the yields given at several incident neutron energy points in the file. After the adjustment, the yield of $$^{238}$$U was almost uniformly decreased by about 3% below 7 MeV. The yield of $$^{239}$$Pu was increased by 2.6% and that of $$^{235}$$U was decreased by 0.9% at the thermal energy point, while the change of yield was less than 0.3% at the other energy points for these nuclides. By using these adjusted yields, the uncertainty of calculated $$beta_{eff}$$ was reduced and the agreement of $$beta_{eff}$$ between experiment and calculation was improved.
